Quebec is the only jurisdiction in Canada that does not have immediate penalties for risky drivers at the .05% to .08% BAC level. We believe it’s time to step up the fight against impaired driving.
Our vision is clear – to see the creation of strong administrative sanctions in the .05% to .08% BAC range. By doing so, we aim to create a culture of responsibility and ensure that impaired driving is met with swift and appropriate consequences.
Even small amounts of alcohol can impair driving. Research shows that key driving skills are impaired at levels below the federal legal limit of .08% BAC. That’s why all jurisdictions in Canada except Quebec and the Yukon have supplemented the federal law with their own administrative (provincial) licence suspensions at the .05% to .08% BAC level.
Strong administrative sanctions are a powerful deterrent against impaired driving. Jurisdictions with strong sanctions and penalties at the .05% to .08% BAC level have seen a significant decline in impaired driving crash fatalities, creating safer communities for all road users.
Adopting a strong administrative licence suspension program at the .05% to .08% BAC level will align Quebec with best practices to prevent impaired driving and ensure the well-being of citizens. Surveys have shown the majority of Quebec residents support having administrative sanctions to take impaired drivers off the roads.
